Robin van Persie has made the move to Turkey with Fenerbahce after Premier League giants Manchester United accepted a transfer offer for the Netherlands international.
On the back of securing the services of United winger Nani, the Turkish side have further strengthened their squad ahead of the new season by snapping up the 31-year-old.
While Van Persie has struggled with injuries over the past 12 months, it has still come as something of a surprise to see Louis van Gaal willing to sell the striker with still 12 months left on his contract at Old Trafford. The United manager is still stamping his mark at the club he joined last summer, and the departure of RVP will now allow the Dutchman more freedom to make some big moves in the transfer market before the new season.
Van Persie has been one of the Premier League's most prolific and consistent goalscorers ever since making the move from Feyenoord to Arsenal in 2004. During his eight seasons with the Gunners, the striker scored 96 Premier League goals for the club, earning the Golden Boot in his final year for finishing as the league's top scorer before Sir Alex Ferguson spent £24 million to take him from the Emirates to Old Trafford in the summer of 2012.
In his first season at United, Van Persie picked up from where he had left off at Arsenal, going on to top the goalscoring charts again with 26 goals to help the club to their 20th Premier League title, and the Dutchman's first.
While things haven't gone to plan for the striker over the past couple of seasons, with injuries and United's disappointing form playing a part, Van Persie has still reached double figures in terms of goals both years and is still arguably one of European football's best forwards.
The Fenerbahce fans were somewhat surprisingly delighted to welcome Nani to Turkey following the Portuguese winger's move, and the signing of Van Persie has convinced many supporters, as well as punters at http://www.bet365.com.au/NEWS/en/betting, that the club will be a significant force to be reckoned with for the Super Lig title next season.
Having finished just three points behind champions Galatasaray last season, new Fenerbahce manager Victor Pereira is being given all the tools he needs to guide the 19-time champions to the title next season.
With United turning down the opportunity to turn Radamel Falcao's dismal loan spell into a permanent one, Javier Hernandez seemingly set to leave Old Trafford, and the club now allowing Van Persie to leave, Van Gaal will be expecting to make some serious moves to restock his attacking options before the start of the new season. A number of options have already been mooted, none more so than a rumoured double swoop for Bayern Munich duo Thomas Muller and Bastian Schweinsteiger, with United apparently exploring the opportunity to sign two players that have been instrumental to both club and country's recent success.
While it remains to be seen whether or not the deal will come to fruition, it's clear that United have a lot of work to do over the next few months to ensure they start the year with a squad capable of challenging for the title.
