Michael Marrone will face a long rehabilitation period after Adelaide confirmed that the 29-year-old ruptured his Achilles tendon during Sunday's grand final win over Western Sydney at Adelaide Oval.

Marrone limped off the ground during the second half and was on crutches after the match.

"We discussed surgery and conservative treatment but the decision made with Michael, the Adelaide United medical staff, and the surgeon was to proceed with surgery," club doctor James Illic said.

Marrone will be sidelined for six to nine months.
