Due to financial issues and structural obstacles in line with the Spanish Liga regulations, Barcelona superstar and world renowned footballing figure Lionel Messi is set to depart the club despite agreeing to a new deal.

The news has come as a shock to the footballing world after it was recently reported that Messi and Barcelona had agreed on a new five-year deal that would have seen him remain at the Catalans for the rest of his career, but that is not the case now.

Barcelona have been actively trying to reduce player wages at the club to remain in line with La Liga financial fair play regulations, but have been unable to do so which has resulted in their club legend ultimately being forced out.

In a statement made by the club, Barcelona notified the footballing world of the shock departure.

"Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations).

"As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.

"FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life."

Messi, 34, is a six-time Ballon D'Or winner and has spent his entire playing career at Barcelona after making his senior debut in 2003, scoring 672 goals in 778 appearances for the club that will likely see him go down as the greatest footballer Barcelona has had and arguably, the greatest footballer of all time.

In light of the news of Messi's departure, French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain have made contact with Messi on a potential move to the club.
