Talented Melbourne City striker Corey Gameiro has suffered a third serious knee injury in two years, leaving his career in the balance.

Gameiro, 23, suffered the injury during a training camp in Townsville last week in an innocuous incident, just a month after resuming training with the team.

He first tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Olyroos duty in November 2014 while contracted to Sydney FC, and suffered the same injury in his fifth game and second start for City last November.

The latest rupture is to his right knee, with scans on Monday confirming his worst fears, with Gameiro to have surgery next week.
