The Italian club struggled in pre-season, going down 6-1 to Tottenham in Norway on Friday, along with a strong of other disappointing results.

De Boer was most recently the manager of Ajax in the Eredivisie, and led the Dutch club to four league titles in the past six years, before stepping down at the end of the 2015-16 season.

Mancini oversaw a fourth placed finish with Inter last season, but the club's Chinese owners are eager to return Milan 'to their glory days' and believe De Boer is the right man for the job.

The job is De Boer's first outside of Holland, and just his second head managerial role.
