A-League 2020/2021 leaders Melbourne City are on a seven-match unbeaten streak. City has played 20 games so far this season, with 13 wins, two losses, and five draws.
Seventh placed Brisbane Roar and ninth-placed Wellington Phoenix, who played out a goalless draw in wet weather on Saturday 1 May, were on similar unbeaten runs. Since Melbourne City beat them on April 5, 2021, the Phoenix has gone six games without losing whilst Brisbane lost their unbeaten streak when they lost 3-2 to Melbourne on 9 May.
Let’s see what unbeaten streaks are happening in the European football leagues at the moment.
Manchester United were on a 17 match unbeaten run stretching back to January 28 when they lost 2-1 to Sheffield United, however this came to an end when they were forced to field a weakened team against third-placed Leicester as they try to squeeze four games into eight days. That defeat ended their hopes to push on and become Premier League champions with defeat at home to Leicester confirming Manchester City as Premier League Champions 2020/21.
Newly-crowned Premier League champions Manchester City, who recently signed Belgium playmaker Kevin de Bruyne to a new contract, were on a 19-match unbeaten run before losing 2-0 to neighbours Manchester United in March.
In Spain, second-placed Real Madrid is unbeaten in their last 15 matches with 10 wins and five draws since losing 2-1 to Levante on January 31, 2021. Eighth-placed Real Betis are also on a great run towards the end of the season, unbeaten in their last seven games since losing 1-0 to Sevilla on Sunday 14 March.
In Italy, league leaders Inter Milan are on an impressive 20 game unbeaten run. Since losing 2-1 to Sampdoria on January 7, Inter has won 16 and drawn 4, including an 11-game winning streak broken in the recent 1-1 draw at Napoli.
Third-placed Atalanta is on a 9-game unbeaten run, with seven wins and two draws.
In France, table toppers Lille are on a 6-game unbeaten run. Second-placed PSG is on a 5-game unbeaten run, as they try to chase down Lille at the top of the table. They currently sit three points behind the leaders with two games to go..
Fifth-placed Marseille recently lost their 5-game unbeaten run, losing away to Saint Etienne and damaging their hopes of Champions League qualification.
Bayern Munich were crowned champions for the ninth straight year and despite a loss to Mainz, they have won eight of their last 10 games with one draw, helping them to seal another Bundesliga title. Mainz are currently on a 9-game unbeaten run which has seen them climb the table to 12th, however too many draws in that run have held them back from challenging for a place in Europe next season.
Borussia Dortmund, with three of the most talked-about young players and goal scorers in Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho, and Jude Bellingham, has lacked consistency so far this season. They have put together a run of five wins on the bounce which has boosted their hopes of Champions League qualification for next season with two games to play.
In Portugal, a Sporting Lisbon team without Bruno Fernandes has to navigate two more games to go undefeated for the entire 2020/2021 season and win their first Primeira Liga title in 19 years. In their 32 games so far, Sporting has won 25 and drawn 7.
Porto is next best on a 26-game unbeaten run. Since losing 3-2 to Pacos Ferreira on October 31, 2020, Porto climbed to second place on the table with 19 wins and 7 draws. This is a remarkable run in itself, but it almost and unfortunately becomes insignificant when compared to that of Sporting Lisbon.
In the Netherlands, league leaders Ajax of Amsterdam have gone undefeated in their 22 games since losing 2-1 to FC Twente on December 6, 2020.
Second-placed PSV Eindhoven is on an five-game unbeaten streak while 2016/2017 Eredivisie champions Feyenoord saw their six-game unbeaten run come to an end away to ADO Den Haag.
First Division A
In Belgium, third-placed Anderlecht finished the 34 match regular season with four wins and a draw.
After sacking Australian coach Kevin Muscat at the beginning of December last year, Sint-Truiden VV managed to hold on to their position just above the relegation zone, winning eight, drawing three, and losing nine of their remaining 20 games.
An unbeaten run does not guarantee a top spot on any table. Still, everyone enjoys a good streak. It makes the fans happier, builds team confidence, and shows the coaches that their training methods and strategies are working.
Melbourne City head coach Patrick Kisnorbo and his staff will hope to continue their unbeaten run and expect more of the same from their players when they take on third-placed Adelaide United later this week. Betway Sports has City at 1.37 odds to win the game on Thursday, May 13, 2021, at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.
