Three Premier League teams have exited the English Football League Cup (EFL Cup) in the third round on Wednesday morning (AEST).

Everton and Bournemouth were beaten by lower league sides, while Leicester were bundled out by Premier League rivals Chelsea.

The Toffees were beaten 2-0 at home by Championship side Norwich, as goals to Steven Naismith and Josh Murphy saw the Canaries advance.

Eddie Howe's men were also ousted by a club in England's second-tier as Simon Makienok scored a hat-trick for Preston North End in their 3-2 win against the Cherries in extra-time.

Leicester and Chelsea also went to an extra 30 minutes, and it was forgotten midfielder Cesc Fabregas who scored a four-minute double early in the extra period to see the Blues progress.

Liverpool and Arsenal kept clean sheets in impressive wins, while Championship sides Newcastle, Leeds and Reading all won through.
