Crystal Palace defender Pape Souare was injured in a car accident on Monday (AEST), the club has confirmed.

Souare was involved in a crash near Heathrow Airport and was airlifted to hospital in London where he still remains.

The defender suffered injuries to his thigh and jaw bone in the crash, and a statement on the club's website said he will remain in hospital while he receives treatment.

Palace manager Alan Pardew also revealed Souare could have broken his leg in the accident, but said he was just thankful the accident wasn't more serious.

“I'm due to see him shortly, he's not in a good way in terms of football because I think he's broke his leg maybe so that's not so good, but thankfully he looks sound other than that,” said Pardew.

“He's a bit bashed up but we'll have to look after him and get him back as quick as we can. He's a great lad and a great player for us and he'll be a big loss.

“It's a blow but these things happen and more importantly it's not more than it could have been because obviously you see the state of the car and the size of the accident, it was a big accident.”

Souare has been a regular in the Palace line up since joining the Eagles in January 2015 from Lille, making a total of 55 appearances for the club to date.
